“Velagapudi Durgamba Government Degree for Women”, was started with a motto “ Sthri Vidya Pravardhatam” – meaning – women education shall prosper. The idea came up with an inspiring word of Mahatma Gandhi.

The college made a humble beginning in the year 1983 with the efforts of the Nidadavole Education Society and Smt. Rajeswari Ramakrishna the reputed managing director of Jeypore Sugars Limited, Chagallu contributed a great deal by financially supporting the college for its establishment as well as for proving infrastructure facilities.

Initially the college was started with a moderate strength of 120 students and offered good combination of courses. B.Com and B.A in 1998, B.Sc Computer Science (MPCs) in 2009, MPC (Math’s, Physics, Chemistry) and BZC (Botany, Zoology, Chemistry) in 2009 and B.Com(Computers) was introduced in the year 2022 and . Add on courses from UGC-COP is added. The student strength reached 425 by the academic year 2021-22.

This institution strives to provide quality education, on girl students who are from rural back drop and marginalized section of the society.
